ECOW – Ecological Clerk of Works

An Ecological Clerk of Works (ECOW) provides a supervisory service on construction sites; where there are ecological risks and increasing cases. An ECOW is required to be present on construction sites. This helps ensure compliance with planning conditions or specific requirements under a Natural England licence. CEC has a team of experienced ECOWs who can advise in the field on the best construction practice for ecological concerns.

CEC can deliver toolbox talks and provide on-site advice about protected species and precautionary methods of working.

CEC can supervise procedures with ecological risks, conduct checks for at-risk habitats or species, and monitor biodiversity on-site. When a protected species licence is in place, we can also manage the conditions and reporting required.

We have provided ECOW teams to major projects across the South West.

CEC provided the construction phase ecological elements of the £300m Carland Cross to Chiverton Cross duelling. We were really impressed with the experience of the ecologists on the project, including large teams of Ecological Clerks of Works. CEC also helped us deliver various ecological enhancements like mammal passes and a bat house to help mitigate for the impacts of the road scheme and we found their expertise and flexibility on a scheme of this size invaluable.
